The Habit of Neighboring (Luke 15:1-7)
Jesus was often criticized by religious leaders for spending time with "sinners." (Lk. 15:2) It makes some sense, since rabbi's customarily spent their lives investing their lives in their students, not sinners. In response to the grumbling Pharisee's, Jesus told a parable about lost sheep. He said that there was "more joy" in heaven over one sinner that repents than ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance. The story confronts us to consider our lives and priorities. Do we have the heart of God for people far from God? Moreover, do we practice common lifestyle rhythms that Jesus did -- gathering around our tables with people who are lost? Eating with them, listening to them, sharing good news with them? One acronym that can guide us all in lifestyle rhythms for the lost is BLESS. Begin with Prayer. Eat. Listen. Serve. Share.
